Irish Mythology and Legends Interwoven in the Landscape

Cliff and Louise were captivated by Cooley’s rolling hills, a patchwork quilt of colour, and the magnificent Mourne Mountains sweeping down to the sea. As outdoor enthusiasts, they were inspired by the area’s legends and history, from the ancient days of the Táin Bó Cúailnge (Cooley Cattle Raid) and Cú Chulainn to the later influence of the Vikings visible in the nearby Carlingford Lough.

The Proleek Dolmen on the Cooley Peninsula

The mythology and numerous historic sites in the county, including religious sites like Monasterboice and Mellifont Abbey, endear them to the area. They are also just a short drive from the Boyne Valley with the famous Newgrange Mesolithic monument, which predates the pyramids of Giza, and the ‘Battle of the Boyne’ visitor’s centre and museum.
