Meet Cliff & Louise, Owners of Walking Holiday Ireland

Cliff, a Dutch native who has lived in Ireland since 1994, and Louise, born and bred in the Dublin Mountains’ foothills, have settled in Blackrock, a seaside village just south of Dundalk, with their children. As a family, they have walked many routes and highly recommend this area to other families, adventurous travellers, and enthusiastic ramblers.
Their relocation to County Louth in the northeast from Dublin, near the Wicklow Mountains National Park and West Cork’s mountains and coast, brought some delightful surprises. Cliff and Louise Wayenberg discovered that the landscapes of this area were not only breathtaking but also steeped in myth, legend, and history.
Irish Mythology and Legends Interwoven in the Landscape
The Cooley’s rolling hills, a patchwork quilt of colour, and the magnificent Mourne Mountains sweeping down to the sea captivated Cliff and Louise. As outdoor enthusiasts, they were inspired by the area’s legends and history, from the ancient days of the Táin Bó Cúailnge (Cooley Cattle Raid) and Cú Chulainn to the later influence of the Vikings visible in the nearby Carlingford Lough.
The mythology and numerous historic sites in the county, including religious sites like Monasterboice and Mellifont Abbey, endear them to the area. They are also just a short drive from the Boyne Valley with the famous Newgrange Mesolithic monument, which predates the pyramids of Giza, and the ‘Battle of the Boyne’ visitor’s centre and museum.
